Why It's Important

Oil does many things in your engine. You probably know that it lubricates the moving parts, but it also does some other key things, chief among them removing heat and debris from the engine. Your cooling system is the primary way that heat is dissipated from the engine, but it would not be able to do its job completely on its own. Oil helps quite a bit. And as the engine runs, tiny metal shavings come off into the engine and are whisked away (along with dirt and grime) by the oil.
Those bits get filtered out by the oil filter so that fresh, clean oil is always running through your engine. However, over time the oil filter becomes full. As the oil gets filled up with debris, it gets much less good at doing all its important jobs. Finally, oil is also important for protecting your engine from rust. Modern synthetic oils contain detergents that help to inhibit corrosion not only from rust but also from road chemicals.

How Often to Do It

In general, a modern Nissan using synthetic oil will only need to have the oil changed every 7,500 to 10,000 miles, or at least once a year. However, there are some caveats here. If you are using old, traditional oil instead of synthetic, you need changes much more frequently. If you have an older model, you also might need more frequent changes. If you do a lot of towing or drive in hostile environments with lots of dust and heat, you might need more frequent changes.

How to Tell It's Needed

If the check oil light comes on or if you're seeing a big puddle of oil in your garage, then you know it's time. If you've reached the right interval of miles or time, you should also get it changed. However, you should also get oil service if you check it and find that the level is low or the oil looks dark and gritty.
