Although not everyone needs or wants a burly SUV or full-sized truck, the demand for them is so high that many manufacturers focus most on them, making it more difficult to find a small, fuel-efficient car. Fortunately, Nissan comes to the rescue with an appealing alternative. The attractive 2024 Nissan Versa is filled with standard features, yet remains affordable, which is why it earned first place in the Best Subcompact Cars section of Car and Driver’s Editors’ Choice list.

4 Reasons the 2024 Nissan Versa is a Top Choice for Budget-Conscious Drivers
Design
The Versa is a four-door subcompact sedan that seats five people. It’s tiny enough to fit easily into the tightest parking spaces yet has lots of room for carpooling to work and picking up the kids from school. The attractive exterior is reminiscent of Nissan’s long well-loved Altima mid-sized sedan. The interior is just as appealing, with upscale soft touches applied to the doors and dash, plus other high-quality materials used throughout.
Performance
A 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine delivering 122 hp and 114 lb-ft of torque is standard on all 2024 Versa models. However, while the base model comes with a 5-speed manual transmission that some drivers will love, a continuously variable transmission (CVT) is standard on all upper-level trims.
Fuel efficiency is excellent throughout the entire line. Models with manual transmissions are estimated to reach an average of 27 mpg in the city and 35 mpg on highways. All other trims should achieve 32 mpg on city streets and 40 mpg on the highway.
Technology
Nissan has equipped the 2024 Versa with the same advanced technology it installs in some of its larger models, such as the 4-speaker audio system and a 7-inch touchscreen display for the infotainment system. Wireless connectivity is standard via Bluetooth, providing hands-free calling and audio streaming. So you can access all your favorite podcasts, playlists, audiobooks, and other content on your phone while on the road.
The Versa also has three USB ports. An optional S+ package for the second-level Versa S CVT trim adds Android Auto compatibility and Apple CarPlay integration. These features are standard on all of the trim levels above that one.
Safety
There’s no question about the 2024 Versa’s safety, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has awarded it a perfect 5-star overall safety rating. Also, Nissan has generously equipped even the lineup’s lowest trim level with an impressive list of standard advanced safety and driver’s aid features, such as:
- Brake Assist
- Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection Prevention and Mitigation
- Rear Automatic Braking Mitigation
- Lane Departure Warning
- Hill Start Assisst
