There are several activities and attractions at Hawaii’s Plantation Village, including the Haunted Sugar Cane Train, Malasadas and Mac nut Barbecue, the Nightly Walk Through History, and the Haunted Mill. The village also hosts a variety of special events and festivals throughout the year, including the Harvest Festival, Hoo-Hoo-Hawai’i (Hawaiian Quilting Festival), and the Hawaiian Festival.
Waipahu Hongwanji Buddhist Temple
The Waipahu Hongwanji Buddhist Temple was built in 1962 to serve the religious and cultural needs of the local Japanese-American community. Located at 94-821 Kuhaulua St, Waipahu, the temple is open to visitors daily, and admission is free. Visitors will enjoy the temple’s peaceful atmosphere and get an inside look at traditional Buddhist services and practices.
The temple holds various events and activities throughout the year, including the Ho-Chur-We-Kai (Spring Celebration), Ho-Chur-Shu-Ri (Fall Harvest Celebration), and the New Year’s Celebration. There are also monthly free workshops and lectures on a variety of topics, including Buddhist teachings, cultural events, and health and wellness. The temple is also a great place to volunteer and make a real difference in the community.
Honouliuli National Monument
Honouliuli National Monument is a powerful reminder of the injustices suffered by many during the World War II-era Japanese American internment. The monument features a preserved portion of a World War II-era Honouliuli Gulag and a museum that tells the story of the site’s history and importance to Hawaii.
Visitors can also take a self-guided walking tour of the gulag grounds, which includes various interpretive panels and artifacts from the era, such as a watch tower, barracks, and a hand-dug well. Honouliuli is a great place to learn about and reflect on an important piece of American history. It is located at 1845 Wasp Boulevard, Building #176, Honolulu.
