1. Keaīwa Heiau State Recreation Area

Featuring the ruins of an ancient Hawaiian temple at the summit of a hill and offering clear views of the Pearl Harbor area, Keaīwa Heiau State Recreation Area is one of the best places to discover the lush nature of Oahu Island and recharge your batteries away from the city. Open to the public every day of the week between 7:00 am and 6:45 pm, this state recreation area encompasses a territory of about 385 acres.

If you decide to visit this public nature reserve, make sure to follow the main hiking trail, which passes by some beautiful panoramic views of the surroundings and can be completed in about two and a half hours. Driving to this state recreation area from the Waipahu city center takes about 15 minutes via route HI-99.

2. Diamond Head

A volcanic tuff cone located a little under 20 miles southeast of downtown Waipahu, Diamond Head is one of the most popular hiking destinations on the island, as well as one of the best spots to take in some fantastic views of Honolulu and its surroundings. Estimated to be about 500,000 years old, Diamond Head was designated a U.S. National Natural Landmark in 1968 and is part of the Honolulu Volcanic Series.

Driving from Waipahu to the main path leading to the summit of this volcanic formation takes about half an hour via route I-H-1. This trail has a total length of a little over one and a half miles and an elevation gain of about 560 feet, making it possible to complete it in about two hours at a moderate rhythm.

3. Puʻuloa Beach Park

Offering beautiful views of the Honolulu downtown skyline, as well as some of the best sunsets in the island, Puʻuloa Beach Park is a fantastic destination to spend a day away from the city, swim in the ocean, and sunbathe in a scenic spot. Located a little under eight miles south of the Waipahu city center, this beach park can be reached in about 15 minutes by car via Fort Weaver Road.
