The majority of systems in your car depend on a steady and stable supply of electricity. Electricity for these systems is produced by the alternator and supplied to them via electrical wires and cables. Over time, electrical problems can develop due to worn or damaged components. At your Nissan dealership, we can fix any of these. These are a few of the problems we can repair.

3 Electrical Problems You Should Fix at Your Nissan Dealership

Worn Alternator

As we’ve seen, the alternator generates your car’s electricity. It’s a simple yet tough component and can work for at least eight years before it needs to be replaced. As an alternator nears the end of its useful life, its electricity production starts to drop. This decline is slow but irreversible. An alternator problem isn’t normally noticed when this happens, as the alternator produces more electricity than your car requires.

Problems develop when the alternator can’t supply enough power for all the system needs. When this happens, your computer has to shift the available power from system to system depending on demand. This can lead to slow accessories, dim then bright headlights, and a host of other problems. We’ll test your alternator to confirm that it’s failing. If it is, we’ll install a replacement to fix the problem.

Weak Battery

The most common sign of a weak battery is starting difficulties. If your battery is healthy, it will immediately send a strong electrical charge to your starter when you hit the start button on the dash. This charge powers the starter, which cranks the engine, and the combustion process will start. A weakening battery will spoil this smooth operation.

If your battery is weakening, you’ll notice an increased delay between pressing the button and your engine starting. The check battery light will also be illuminated as a warning. Your battery could be weak due to age, but it could also be weakened by a worn alternator that doesn’t recharge it sufficiently. We’ll need to investigate to determine the problem, then we’ll repair it.

Damaged Wiring

A vast array of wires and cables connect the alternator to all the systems that need electricity. A car’s engine is a harsh environment for wiring, so each wire and cable is protected by thick insulation. As time passes, the continuous movement of electricity through the wires will cause them to wear out, and worn wires can break.

A broken wire will cut off the electricity supply the component is connected to. Electricity continues to flow into the damaged wire, which will heat up. If the wire gets hot enough, the wire’s protective insulation will burn. Our technicians will examine the wiring and replace any damaged sections to fix this problem.
