Driving becomes a good deal more dangerous after dark. Half of car crash fatalities happen at night even though there are only a quarter as many vehicles on the roads. Your headlights are an essential safety feature for nighttime driving that should always be kept in good condition. If you experience the following issues with your visibility at night, don’t delay in visiting your local Nissan dealer for new headlights

One of Your Headlights Fails

The surest sign that one of your headlights needs to be replaced is if it stops working. Two headlight bulbs failing at once might point to an underlying problem with the electrical supply or wiring, but one failing headlight usually means that the bulb has to go.

Your Headlight Fuse Keeps Blowing

As with most electrical circuits, the fuse protects the system against unusual surges of voltage. So if your headlights suddenly switch off, check the fuse box first.

A blown headlight fuse may indicate a problem with one of the bulbs. It might also point to loose or damaged wiring, or a faulty headlight switch. If you replace the headlight fuse and the new fuse blows as well, ask a technician to figure out the underlying problem.

Your Headlights Are Flickering

Headlights may flicker when one or more of the bulbs are on their last legs. This is more likely if your car uses halogen bulbs with a tungsten filament, which can start to flicker when it becomes damaged.

High-intensity discharge (HID) and light-emitting diode (LED) headlights are less likely to flicker from damage to the bulb. Flickering can also be caused by a loosened or oxidized connection or an issue with the alternator or battery.

Your Headlights Are Fading

All headlight bulbs fade somewhat as they near the end of their lifespans. HID bulbs tend to gradually lose most of their brightness toward the end. Halogen bulbs also fade a great deal, but usually rapidly die after losing full brightness. LED bulbs fade the least, only losing about 20% of their full brightness as they age.

If the light ahead of your car is growing dimmer, try to identify which bulb is fading and have it replaced. The brightness of your headlights is too important to road safety to risk driving with reduced visibility.

Your Headlights Seem Cloudy

Sometimes headlight lenses become cloudy or hazy because the lens acrylic oxidizes in the UV rays of sunlight. In this case, you may need to replace the lenses rather than the bulbs. Hazy light ahead might also simply mean your lenses are dirty and need to be cleaned.
